The Rise of Socialism and Progressivism in American Politics

Since 2015, the terms socialism and progressivism have become increasingly prominent in American politics. Some say, “thanks to Bernie Sanders”. But I think Bernie came into the picture at the right time with a message about socialism and progressivism that he had been sharing already for decades.

The timing was perfect because the country has been in decline for decades, and the people were searching for progress. That progress was labeled “progressivism” and republicans called it, “socialism”.

Many candidates running for office today, particularly on the left, have embraced these labels as a way to distinguish themselves from centrists and the status quo. At the same time, many on the right have used these labels as a way to attack their opponents, painting them as extremists who want to radically transform America. However, what is often lost in these debates is a real understanding of what these terms mean and how they relate to the issues facing the country today.
