The Biggest Scam in History has been the Concept of a “Job”
You work your entire lifetime and you’re still broke when you die.
The biggest scam in US history has been the artificial social construct of a “job”. That ‘job’ is supposed to be the way you gain access to freedom in modern society. The proverbial “they” told us to achieve a “work/life” balance as if that was going to solve the shortcomings we discover on our way through adulthood.
The carrot-on-a-stick to keep people focused and loyal to the concept of a “job” is the elusive “retirement”. Retirement is that thing that resembles freedom that’s supposed to come about as soon as your health problems start to kick in and you are unable to remain a productive worker because of your health issues. Yes, even the concept of retirement is a scam.
“Normal is getting dressed in clothes that you buy for work and driving through traffic in a car that you are still paying for — in order to get to the job you need to pay for the clothes and the car, and the house you leave vacant all day so you can afford to live in it.”
― Ellen Goodman
The Past: Transitioning from Slave to Employee
Way back in history, wealthy folks discovered they couldn’t have slaves anymore. So they devised a way to fool people into working for them anyway. They called it a “job”. Only this time, they didn’t want to provide housing, food, healthcare and transportation. In fact, they didn’t want their new slaves to want to escape so they could save on the cost of security as well. They had to name it something that didn’t sound like involuntary servitude.
They got the name from a character in a well known book at the time called the Bible. The character’s name is “Job”. He suffered his entire life and died miserably. Those in power said, “Eureka! THAT’S IT! We’ll call it a “job” instead of slavery. They’ll never make the connection and we can laugh about it forever!”
So they did.
