The Year When Everything & Everyone Abruptly Changed, Forever

The term, “hindsight is 20/20” will forever mean something completely different now that we’ve experienced the year 2020.

What follows is a list of some of the significant things that happened in the year that will live in infamy, 2020.

2020, the year that #Fuck2020 trended more than #FuckCancer

In Australia, tens of millions of acres burned to the ground at the start of 2020. More than a billion animals dead, hundreds of species required emergency intervention in the Australian Bushfires.

Hong Kong protests turn massive. Organizers say as many as a million people protested in a single event.

When we started the year, Flint Michigan still didn’t have clean water. The Flint water crisis started in 2014. They still don’t have clean water.

Iranian General Qasem Soleimani was assassinated by a US drone attack in Bagdad, Iraq on January 3, 2020. Is that even legal?

In November 2020, Iranian Scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated by unknown forces. It’s a trend.

Store shelves empty when fears of food shortages grow across America, with toilet paper being the first to be hoarded leaving Americans empty handed.

The pandemic that started mysteriously as an epidemic in 2019, hits every country in the world in early 2020. And it is still spreading and mutating.

Worldwide efforts to deal with the pandemic result in layoffs, businesses closing, economic chaos on a global scale.

Every country sees massive new cases of the virus and millions die. The numbers keep changing rapidly. I dare not say the totals because tomorrow they’d be dramatically increased.

The US Economy collapses due to uncertainty and a failure of the government to properly address the pandemic.

The Trump administration stalls efforts to address the pandemic resulting in millions of unnecessary deaths.

Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crashes in Tehran on January 8, killing 176 people. Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303 crashes in Karachi; only 2 survivors on a flight with 99 passengers.

Initially, gas prices tanked, but then go up to find an artificial plateau. The demand on gas went down, but the price fixers prevented it from the natural ‘supply and demand’ price reductions.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the royal family.

A huge 7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes the coastal area of Oaxaca, Mexico and is felt more than 400 miles away.

Schools, colleges, and all manner of work went online. Many people shift to working from home.

In February, the stock market crashed. The crash lasted for more than two weeks, and was the fastest crash in history. The crash was the worst crash since the 1929 crash. The International Monetary Fund expects the world economy to shrink 3%, the worst contraction since the Great Depression.

Zoom became a Verb.

Netflix, Instacart, DoorDash and Amazon see incredible growth due to the Pandemic. Amazon seeing the most deliveries ever, resulting in a 74% gain in their shares. Even Spotify got a huge bump during the year as they took on Joe Rogan and Michelle Obama, acquired Anchor, The Ringer, and Gimlet, and grew to 144 million paid subscribers.

Etsy & Shopify became the last resort to small retail businesses, allowing millions to continue at least some sales. Etsy became the biggest mask-making and selling powerhouse of all.

George Floyd was killed by police on May 25, 2020, resulting in massive protests against police brutality across the US and in other countries. The police responded with more brutality.

Police in unmarked vehicles begin kidnapping people randomly on the streets with no legal due process and no legal authority.

Riots ensue in many cities.

Movie theaters, shopping malls, churches, schools, and city streets empty leaving the country a sobering quiet.

Social media was buzzing with the news that Murder Hornets were found in the Pacific Northwest.

Locust swarms devastate Africa and Asia, threatening the food supply across the regions of East Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent. Reports claim the outbreak is the worst in more than 70 years in Kenya, and the worst in 25 years in Ethiopia, Somalia and India.

Sahara dust storm covers the southern US with dust in late June creating dangerous levels of air pollution and low visibility.

Mask wearing becomes both a mandate and something that millions protest. Social Distancing becomes the new buzzword. Hand soap and disinfectant are scarcely available.

Dining inside restaurants sees a sharp decline. Dining outside or take out increases. But hundreds of thousands of restaurants close because they can’t afford to stay open with skeleton crews, minimal offerings, and diminishing customers.

Holidays, spring break celebrations, and events are cancelled or postponed to prevent the risk of spreading the virus. Cardboard cutouts replace crowds in stadiums everywhere.

Massive Fires erupt in California and the Northwest and turn the sky orange for months.

So far in 2020, 60 different volcanoes were actively erupting. 17 of those were new eruptions that started during the year, including the December eruption of the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai’i.

2000 people died in August due to massive flooding in India and Bangladesh.

The rise of the white nationalist organizations and rogue rightwing groups creates uncertainty and divide in communities all over the country.

Ebola outbreak in Africa, again.

Trump is impeached in the House but the Senate doesn’t prosecute, so the matter is dropped.

Red hats become a symbol of ignorance and hate.

In 2020, fueled by Trump’s rhetoric, right wing hate groups recruit thousands and protest often resulting in violence and arrests.

Russia’s SolarWinds Hack proves to be massive. Trump claims it wasn’t Russia.

Russia has been putting bounties on US Troops. Trump dismisses it out of hand.

Scandinavian sensors detect radiation leak in Russia. Russia denies nuclear incident.

The unemployment rate in the US exceeds the great depression.

Trump, and many in his administration tested positive for Covid19. Then they recover due to a level of care and treatments not available to the rest of us.

The Black Lives Matter (BLM) is reportedly the largest movement in US history. The efforts are so large-scale that the protests globalize across most major countries worldwide.

A Florida teen hacks the Twitter accounts of Joe Biden, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk in an apparent Bitcoin scam.

The DNC undermines the Bernie Sanders campaign and helps Biden win the primary. Biden, with the much needed help of progressives, beats Trump in the election.

Ghislaine Maxwell, friend of Jeffrey Epstein, is arrested on sex-trafficing charges.

Harvey Weinstein is found guilty of multiple sexual crimes.

Cruise ships, well known for spreading viruses, stop sailing completely, but their stocks don’t tank for some odd reason.

In August, a massive detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate at a Beirut port, killed at least 190 people.

In December, Tom Cruise yells at his production crew for not adequately social distancing leading to 5 of them quitting that afternoon.

A Vaccine against Covid19 (SARS-CoV-2 ) is developed by not one, but at least two major vaccine efforts that produce historically high efficacy rates (94% and 95%). The typical flu vaccine is only 40% to 50% effective.

The 2020 Summer Olympics are postponed until 2021 (for now).

So far, 2020 appears to be the warmest year on record beating 2016 which was the warmest ever recorded.

After 9 months of posturing and doing nothing in congress, the government passed a Covid Relief bill that includes, among other things, $600 to US citizens, and $300 per week of enhanced unemployment assistance. The entire country is upset that it’s far too little, and way too late.

Meanwhile, congress hurries off to celebrate the holidays with their families and their cozy little $174,000 salaries.

Nashville, Tennessee bombing on Christmas day. Appears to be a suicide bombing.

Birds falling out of the sky, dead; 80% of the thousands of songbirds that died suddenly showed typical signs of emaciation. They starved to death, apparently due to climate change.

One thing is certain; 2020 will be remembered.
